Call for Running Stitch Co-ordinators
Would you like to help with the Running Stitch artwork?
BildMuseet will present Running Stitch, an artwork by Hamilton, Southern and St Amand in the Open Source Embroidery exhibition 6.6. – 6.9. 2009.
Running Stitch is an invitation to people in Umea to create a hand-sewn map of their walks. Starting at BildMuseet, participants will be invited to take a GPS mobile phone on an hour walk exploring the locality, their walk will be projected live onto a giant embroidery canvas in the exhibition.
We are looking for volunteers to learn how to use the GPS equipment and how to stitch the canvas. You will show other people how to take part in the project throughout the summer. To be a host, you will need to be available between June 4th and 9th for training, and for at least 2 Sundays throughout June, July and August.
If you are interested in taking part please contact Camille Ouellette.

Recently, my some of my classmates and I have been preparing for the Degree Exhibition. Many of us are working on business cards and it’s been fun working on them, in spite of the little time we have. This site sent by alumnus Hannes Seeberg (thanks!) was especially inspiring! Thanks Hannes!

The Google I/O conference at San Francisco ended with Google dropping a bomb. Say hello to Google Wave, a unique service from the company that, according to many, has the potential to be the next big thing after e-mail. As we file this story, the latest wave from Google has already hogged the headlines and it has managed to hold on to be a trending topic on Twitter.
So, what exactly is the Google Wave? To simplify things, consider it to be an extension, or rather an evolution of existing e-mail, IM and file-sharing technologies. With Wave, users can share images, videos, converse in what Google terms a collaborative conversation stream.

Rahul must be a happy person to see his vision in action :-)
Remember Johan Frössén, UID BA graduate from 2007. He’s now working at Nokia and explaining his work there:
A big HELLO from Umeå Johan :-)
Augmented Reality in the future. Imagined by Invivia for Microsoft. Two visually VERY impressive concept videos.
Invivia sez: “the hyper-real phenomenon portrayed focuses on an ability to instantly personalize space as well as inject/reveal hidden properties of daily objects. The emphasis both in concept and execution was to remove the digital influence inherent to computing and focus on its repercussions. Analog devices behave in extraordinary ways in tangent with, or sometimes the complete absence of, complicated computing systems. The actual filming of the video also reflects this approach, lighting and placement of real objects to appear rendered and rendered objects to appear real.â€Â

Here is a semi-intersting documentary on mobile phones all around the world. It pretty much states the obvious, but has it’s moments. Plus it’s free. Can’t beat free TV.
An interesting article at Wired by Kevin Kelly.

Worth peeking at this project. Kind of similar to something multitouch Barcelona made.
“Disturb Me†is an interactive installation between human and his environment. It is to make perceptible the reciprocal links and often forgotten contact, that we maintain with our environment.
The projection depends on the sound emitted by the spectators and creates consequently, a transitory and colored environment. The projected forms are revealed when in contact with surfaces of the room.
The senses are awakened, the room becomes alive.
Mass collaboration; social responsibility and good will; bottom-up decision-making.This is a really great piece about how deep the transformation we are going through is and will continue to be.
Via Experientia.

This is what we have been doing all along here (at least us near-masters). It’s nice to see term coined to it and getting some back-up material to justify the means. Remember this future students. There’s a whole bunch of writings about the subject matter on Near Future Laboratory.
