Just found that Voltfestivalen (Volt – the festival for electronic music) is up June 9th in Stockholm.
Anybody from UID/UmeÃ¥ going? It’s very tempting, the lineup is sweet. Let me know!!!

Leap represents an entirely new way to interact with your computers. It’s more accurate than a mouse, as reliable as a keyboard and more sensitive than a touchscreen. For the first time, you can control a computer in three dimensions with your natural hand and finger movements.
Many schools and programs are having their degree shows at this time of year. I tought it would be interesting to collect and review intriguing and inspiring IxD work, while UID IxD graduating students are wrapping up their final projects. Reminder: UID’12 Design Talks and Degree Exhibition will take place June 4-5, more info at http://www.uid.umu.se/12.
ITP Spring Show 2012
Tisch School of the Arts, New York
http://itp.nyu.edu/shows/spring2012/category/projects/.
I like Bricolo mechanical music, Descriptive Camera and BurritobOt.
All the thesis project presentations (including speaker, slides, crowd video streams) are available here. Amazing, but if you don’t know the projects, it’s hard to navigate a bit just by unknown names…
Interactive Art and Computational Design, Spring 2012
Carnegie Mellon University
http://golancourses.net/2012spring/category/finalproject/
Great documentation of the final projects. These are for one course taught by Golan Levin, not a full program.
IN/VISION, 2012 MFA Interaction Design Festival
School of Visual Arts, New York

It’s hard to differentiate course projects from thesis endeavours, but a few are listed here.
Goldsmiths UG Degree Show
London

Coming soon, but the 2011 crop crop looks pretty sweet, so 2012 should be good too!
HDK – School of Design and Crafts
Gothenburg
Website and www.hdkexamen2012.se (in swedish, nice countdown)
From our southern neighbours in Gothenburg, the exhibition is set for June 2-10, but it seems many projects are already viewable: Design BA,Design MA, Child Culture Design MA and Business & Design MA.
Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2012
Stockholm
www.konstfack2012.se
The exhibition is running now, May 16th to 27th. The online exhibition has basic coverage of most projects. The most relevant and closest to IxD are Experience Design and Formgiving Intelligence MA, plus Industrial Design BA. UID alumnus Hampus Edström has his MA project online but the images are missing.
Carleton University School of Industrial Design
Ottawa, Canada
exhibition.id.carleton.ca
This canadian school offers both BA and MA programs in Industrial Design. The exhibition is divided in interest groups:Access Sport (sport + disabilities), Blue Sky, Fireline (forest firefighting), Lucid Space (office/workplace), Sprout (interesting technologies for social interaction) and Start (business-oriented). Horizontal scroll to discover the projects!
Emily Carr University of Art + Design Grad Exhibition 2012
Vancouver, Canada
grad2012.ecuad.ca
A diverse set of projects under Design (BA I assume) and Master of Applied Arts (MAA).
I’ll add more soon, and you are very welcome to contribute your best links.
Learn more about robots and how to survive an uprising. Nice animation! Check more great (commercial) videos from Epipheo Studios.

This is not hot news, this little cardboard camera from Ikea was announced about a month ago. It was apparently developed by Teenage Engineering for IKEA. Teenage Engineering is the swedish design studio behind the sweet synthesizer and controller OP-1 and Oplab Musical Experimental Board.
Very nice swedish IxD work!
Maybe the interaction workshop should back a couple of these kits? :)
Some of you probably use Twitter, GReader and/or other apps and social networks to stay up to date with what’s going on out there. I talked to Camille last week and decided to create an IFTTT recipe that pushes every blog entry to a Twitter account: @umeaixd.
In case you haven’t heard of IFTTT (I see nobody mentioned them here in the blog), IFTTT is a super easy to setup trigger system that lets you setup actions based on “if THIS happens, then do THAT”.
So that’s basically it. This might be useful to those of you who use Twitter to stay in the loop.
Touché: Enhancing Touch Interaction on Humans, Screens, Liquids, and Everyday Objects

Inspiring work by Disney Research presented at CHI 2012. I’m not so sure about the various applications presented at the end. In a perfect world, yes, but everyday life is messier than this. It would be worrisome to know that I have to close the door a particular way, otherwise it would broadcast wrong signal/status.

Cogoo, a japanese bike sharing service, recently outfitted a BMX bike with various sensors and electronics to transform it into a DJ controller. Street riding ability meets samples and beat-box.
And here is their bike sharing program video, with the associated smartphone App to lock/unlock the bike. Nicely illustrated !!!
Here is a teaser of the Interactivity Research & Exploration demos and installations to be presented at CHI 2012 next week in Austin, Texas. Great stuff !!!
If you don’t know what CHI is about, you should!!! Here their official snippet:
The ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems is the premier international conference on human-computer interaction. CHI 2012 focuses on the centrality of experience—from the models, theories and practical insights we need to understand and design for user experience to experiencing innovation through hands-on interactivity.
Lynn is sending this article The Messy Art Of UX Sketching by Peiter Buick. Good tips and all. I like the line that reads “Copying And Pasting For The Real World”!

Interaction-Design.org is back again with a new chapter of its IxD Encyclopedia, and this time it is written by Steve Mann, the great Canadian at the origin of what we can now call wearable computing. Steve Mann, is not your average joe: he was broadcasting personal video before the internet was even built! He attended TEI last February in Kingston (Canada) and it was insightful to learn about his impressive research and work.
