Knobs, wires, big bulky panels and analog circuits in the pursuit of the ultimate analog sound.
“I Dream of Wires” (IDOW) is an upcoming, independent documentary film about the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer — exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. IDOW is written and directed by Robert Fantinatto with Jason Amm (Ghostly International recording artist Solvent) serving as producer and co-writer.
Duration is a timeline for creative coding. Create live performances, interactive installations, and music visualizations by synchronously composing servos, lighting, and projection. Duration integrates with OpenFrameworks, Processing, Cinder, vvvv, Unity3d, Quartz, and any other OSC enabled environment.
Finally, someone is proposing a bimanual solution to complex UIs and applications. Mixing key presses and fine spatial control and gestures to tap into the zillion of controls and selections available in modern applications. And it is sufficiently different operation than using a custom controllers like a space SpaceMouse or other 3D controllers or joysticks. Sure it is limited to a few apps on Mac at the moment, but the underlying mode of operation/interaction is solid I believe. I’ve seen such ideas proposed and discussed in academia before (Bill Buxton in particular), but never in a commercially available app or hardware/software package. Let’s hope support grows for more apps and OS level interaction.
The Design Frontiers Workshop Series gives design practitioners an opportunity to work in an immersive, collaborative and multidisciplinary setting at the cutting edge of design. Set at the Cal Design Lab at the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley (California, USA), each one-week workshop is designed by an expert in the topic domain that is pushing the boundaries of making, and features a combination of informational lectures, structured hands-on learning activities and self-directed open-ended experimentation. Workshop participants have the opportunity to gain exposure to novel techniques and technologies, to develop skills and capabilities in emerging domains, and to further their own interests and visions in the company of other workshop participants.

Watch David Cuartielles demoing the new Arduino GSM Shield. It looks like an super easy platform to sketch and prototype phone or sms centric IxD projects. Well done David and the Arduino members behind this new product.
Google Glass is still in beta but that’s not stopping the search giant from showcasing more oddball projects bubbling out of its labs—including a goofy “talking shoe” which is currently making a star turn at SXSW 2013 in Austin, Texas.
Google’s latest toy “aims to translate movement data [into] witty messages to users and their friends,” TechCrunch’s Gregory Ferenstein reported. Thus, in a Google video promo (below) the sharp-tongued shoe mutters, “This is boring” when its wearer is loafing on a park bench but perks up when he breaks…
Hello World! is a documentary series on three programming languages –Processing, Open Frameworks and Pure data– that have increased the role of coding in the practice of artists, designers and creators around the world. The series explores the creative possibilities expanded by these open source tools and the importance of their growing online communities.
The first video of the series will be made available on February 28th.
Related to the post below on gestural interaction, the article linked to below traces such interfaces and those on smartphones, tablets etc. to interface visions that were developed for film.
The key point I take home from it is that we (interaction designers) need to think hard about how and who evaluates the desirability and aesthetics of our work, so who do we intend to convince of our designs and by what means?
So then in relation to e.g. the Experience Prototyping course here at UID: how and to what extent can we prototype an experience/interaction with e.g. a video of the design. Does how we use a medium of communicating the design implicitly define what we design: i.e. do we intend to convince an onlooker of the designed interaction of its ‘sexiness’ or effectivity, as opposed to the the actual person interacting.
Using groundbreaking technology, MYO is able to measure electrical activity in your muscles instantly. The result is a seamless way to interact with computers, and a truly magical sense of control.
This product comes from Thalmic Labs, based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada! Nice :-) https://getmyo.com
The DUO Kit is a low cost 3D motion sensor that anyone can build. Paired with a powerful API & SDK it provides companies, researchers and students the ability to create custom 3D interactive environments.
Nice to see a DIY Leap-alike project that anyone can build and tweak. A Kickstarter campaign is coming soon.
C4 is a brand new creative-coding framework lets you build expressive user experiences and create works of art. C4 gives you the power of the native iOS programming environment with a simplified API that lets you get down to working with media right away. Build artworks, design interfaces, explore new possibilities of working with media and interaction.
C4 is the brainchild of Travis Kirton and a research project of his, Sebastian Boring, Dominikus Baur, Lindsay MacDonald and Sheelagh Carpendale at the University of Calgary.
from the same place that brings us the LaserOrigami, a little older but still an idea I’d like to see implemented on every lasercutter near you:
Constructable is an interactive drafting table that produces precise physical output in every step. Users interact by drafting directly on the workpiece using a hand-held laser pointer.
