Spime

January 21 2009

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a name for it! SPIME! Which translates as: smart object. It is not actually a bad idea. One friend of mine keeps losing her car keys all the time and asked me if could make something that she would be able to call her keys, so she could hear where they are. Well, spimes are actually those kind of objects. Embedded with scary technology, spimes are googlable stuff. So you could just type in Google: “Where are the keys to my Bentley?” Google would probably answer: “You are a designer. No Bentleys for you, but the keys to your 1988 Toyota have been eaten by your dog. Do you want the vet’s number?”

Here’s 50 minutes talk by Brucey-boy on Spimes

If you are interested in SPIME and the vision of the future according to Bruce, I invite you to read his little book: Shaping Things.

PS. Nice book cover hey :-)

Good book, definitely worth the read.

And I’m pretty sure Vitorio is in Umea right now… up on Peddagoggrand :)

I have seen Vitorio.

My question was about Bruce Sterling. Vitorio said he’s coming to UmeÃ¥ and I was just wondering if anyone knows something more.

I think it is Matt Cottham that is inviting 3 of his buddies—one of them being Mr. Sterling, another a Norwegian fellow named Timo (I think) and the other I can’t remember—for a conference sometime in March or April (can’t remember) at UID. :-D

Yeah, the cover of the book is quite something (I thought it was a joke until I followed the link to the book’s Amazon page).

Nope, Matt Cottam is arranging a visit from these three nice fellows:

-Matt Jones (from Dopplr, http://www.dopplr.com)
-Timo Arnall (from Oslo, Touch project, http://www.elasticspace.com)
-Adam Greenfield (Nokia Design, author of the book Everyware, http://speedbird.wordpress.com)

They should be visiting UID at the end of March. I guess more info will come from Matt and/or Mikael.
