BACKGROUND

This project was about the lamp design with the sustainability and ecological perspective. My task was to design a reading lamp for children aged from 7-14 years old.

My Goal

For the children at this early age, having a good reading habit is really important for their further study and even for their whole life. So, my goal is to create a reading lamp which can emotionally effect the user's behavior.

My ECO Perspective

Eco study was part of this project. From the LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) calculation of the existing product, I know that, in the long run the energy usage is the biggest impact on the environment. So, except for the consideration of material and production, I hope my design could enhance the young user's awareness of energy conservation.

The Story Behind The Concept

Save power
The lamp is just like the combination of the light bulb and the battery. To some, the shape visualized the power consumption, and the information I want to convey to the young user is the awareness of power saving.

Charge mind
Putting books into the bookcase is like the charging process for the battery. In this metaphor, books are the power source both for the lamp and your brain.

Encourage Reading

A clever interaction behavior was added to make the lamp more interesting and more attractive for the children. When there is no book in the bookcase, the light can not be turn on and the indication button turns red to encourage the user to place books in it.

MOCKUP

To get the scale and proportion right, I built mockups with different sizes of the light bulb and the body. From the feedback collected by going around and asking people, A2 (shown in the picture) was chosen from the combinations.

PROTOTYPE

In order to clearly demonstrate how to use the lamp and how the user interact with it, I built a full size working prototype and then made a short movie to show the idea.
