Binaural Sound Experience

February 13 2012

IxD1 students are working with sound these days and this little Sony UK write-up fits the topic very well. Sony UK released some material about binaural sound: a few videos, a short How-To PDF and 100 free sound samples. There is absolutely nothing about binaural sound, but I find it interesting that a big corp like Sony pushes this to the world. Sure their material screams “buy Sony gizmos”, but the idea of focusing on (binaural) sound and simple photography is quite nice in a way.

Do know that we have two sets of binaural microphones/headphones in the Interaction Workshop if you want to experiment with this. And we have a lot more audio gear and software if that’s your thing.

Hi!

It’s definitely very fun and interesting to play with those bin-aural microphones. You IXD1 guys really should take an advantage of that.

Also the H2 sound recorder ZOOM is very good since it has two built-in directional (stereo) microphones. You can play with the 3d panning function, even though it is not working perfect on this microphone you can make some tricks to really do some 3d panning.

I was working a lot with sound on my degree project last year. Have a look at my project:

And check the two blogs I have, one describing the process:

and the second one with some inspiration links of sound and multi-sensory interfaces:

Looking forward to see the results and good luck to everyone.
