Feedback and comment request for UID Degree 2010 site

March 16 2010

Last year’s degree site www.dh.umu.se/degree2009 was not perfect, but at the same time I feel it was a good improvement over the 2008 edition. First, it was developed a week before, instead of the weekend before. The graphic identity was different and that we can never compare, but content-wise, each student had the opportunity to show more images, text, links/urls and videos.

I know UID is asking various consultancies this year to pitch-in for the job. I’m curious to know what graduates and current students think of the 2009 degree site. Can I ask you to post (or email me if you prefer) your feedback, comments and overall appreciation or critique of the site. You can bash all you want (it’s the IN-ter-Net), but as always constructive criticisms are highly valued. I’ll try to pass this information to the relevant people who are developping the 2010 site.

I’m posting screenshots here (I don’t know why actually, since the site is still accessible):

Homepage view with random projects

Matrix of all the students

Program view with list of students

Student view with medium image and thumbnails

Lightbox view of fullsize image

So please post your comments and suggestions for the 2010 degree site. Thanks!

Hi Camille,

Thanks for posting this. Screenshots are always welcome :) makes the site prettier.

I thought the website last year was fantastic, considering it was done under the usual duress of UID admin politics. I believe we are constrained by the UmU template, but you did a great job of making things come together professionally. I was really proud to use the website when applying for jobs and sending it to people to see. I liked the simplicity and effectiveness of the website. It did its job real well.

I have no real critique except that I hope whoever is hired does better. I believe there is scope for the addition of twitter-feeds, linked-in info, other information making the site a little more personal.

I felt the site was a bit too formal at times, but maybe its meant to be?

Would be nice if the personality of the people graduating was allowed to flourish a bit more. Makes such a difference when you can sense more than just the degree projects of graduating students. It makes people viewing it feel they know a bit more about students and their work. It is also a nice departing memory for students.

Would be nice perhaps to get to know a little more about what they’re like, not like etc. Bring in inspiration from ning, Facebook, Linkedin etc.

Just some ideas! :)

I agree with rahul, it would be nice to add some kind of vCard section for each student with a short bio and online presence.

The layout was really nice, I liked it a lot. My only concern was related to the matrix of all the students. The list of students on the right and the list of projects was not aligned when the titled of the degree project was using two lines of text. It was easy to follow that Vitorio’s project was Mapping experiences, but the last ones were not aligned with each of the students… Anyways, that was not such a big thing, since there was a picture of the student in the project page, but it was a bit confusing…

Besides that, and this is a personal preference, I’d use bigger images and avoid lightbox. It’s almost everywhere nowadays and the screen resolutions of the people visiting the website will be pretty decent. I love the style of websites like http://www.weareacademy.com/historyofflight/ or http://cargocollective.com, but besides that, I still think last year’s site was very good!

Thanks Jordi for the feedback. I agree with the alignment for the name + project. The goal was to highlight the name/project and change the top image on mouseOver, but we ran out of time. And we never addressed the issue with the misaligned lists. I’ll fix it soon as it is quite trivial just to align them.
