Blogs

It seems that the current students aren’t in to blogging stuff they find as much as we were.  Or is it that they don’t know where to find this stuff? Anyway, I’m starting my own blog and Rahul’s got one and a few other former students. So, we won’t be posting here so much I guess. Share your knowledge, it’s really the only way we learn! If you don’t know where to find new stuff, get a RSS reader (Firefox users can get Sage, it’s really good) or sign up to Bloglines, which is really good as well. And start adding newsfeeds.

My (very long) list after the break.

A Nice Gesture Stories of gesture and sign language, HCI, perception and robots

Adam Greenfield’s Speedbird

Architectradure Cati Vaucelle blogs mostly about MIT stuff with a feminine touch

augmented.org All things Augmented Reality can be found here

baekdal.com Highly recommended. One of the best Interaction Design webzines

Beyond the Beyond Bruce Sterling complains about the state of interactions and experiences. Highly recommended

Boing Boing One of the most famous webzines. Sometimes IxD / UX related stuff

Create Digital Motion has a lot of VJ/Processing/animation stuff. Sister blog Create Digital Music both of them have a lot of IxD stuff. Recommended

Creative Applications has a lot of iPhone stuff, but interesting stuff as well (mostly software). Recommended

Doors of Perception John Thackara blogs about stuff. Recommended

Engadget and Gizmodo both have a lot of gadgets, displays and other stuff. Either one is recommended

Futurismic looks in to the near future interactions and experiences

grinding.be this is probably where most of my posts have come from. If you are gonna be reading just one blog, this might be the one

Hack a Day interesting stuff mostly microcontrollers or synths or whatever. Highly recommended

Near Future Laboratory and Pasta&Vinegar Nicholas Nova & Julian Bleecker post stuff on two blogs. Sometimes interesting stuff. Behaviour models etc.

Interactive Architecture Interaction Design on a bigger scale

Hyperexperience new for me, but seems to be really interesting

Infosthetics all things visual information design

Spatial Robots also new. Similiar to grinding or this blog

Fashioning Technology if you fashion and interaction design, this is where you find it. Recommended

Next Nature Very Highly Recommended. It’s about the nature we humans have created and experiences we encounter in it.

We make money not art Super-interesting stuff not all related to IxD but still recommended.

..and last but definitely not least Metafilter where a community finds the most interesting stuff and posts it. A bit difficult to read at first, but well worth it.

There are many, many more, but that’s a very good start. I’ll post more if need be. Also, I’m interested to read your list

Thanks for this list Mikko. Also for the comments. I do agree that it would be nice to see the exciting forum that this blog provides being shared by everyone who is part of the IxD-Ume̴ community. There are some of us who are happy to keep posting on it Рbut it would great to see more (especially 1st years) blogging about what they find exciting. It is also the best way us ex-students can learn about what you are doing (something we are ALWAYS happy and jealous to know about :) )

to add to Mikko’s list (thanks!), I would recommend –

http://johnnyholland.org/

http://www.fastcompany.com/

http://designobserver.com/

http://news.cnet.com/

There are sooo many more! Post away, Umeåns! :)

Nice list, Mikko. You read a lot more blogs than I do. An excellent and important blog for Interaction Designers to read which is not on your list is:

Experientia’s Putting People First.

Much less IxD centered blogs, but somehow related are:
It’s Nice That – Graphic Design Focus.
Synthtopia – Synth geekery.

The second years are quite overloaded right now, but I’m sure people will keep on posting stuff as soon as we are a bit more relaxed. First years don’t seem to be so into the blog though… Come on guys, get an account and post stuff!!

And thanks for the links Mikko!

Thanks for the links Mikko, Rahul and Roberto. Gotta like Synthopia!

As for the first years, they know of the blog and how to log into it. But I guess they’re a little shy. For now at least.
